List of Recommendations on how to foster R&D in VET centers

This deliverable proposes a series of 11 concrete recommendations for vocational training centres (VET) in Europe, to encourage the emergence of research and development (R&D) centres in the field of art and craft. The result of three years’ collaborative work as part of the European MOSAIC project, this report is based on a mixed methodology combining documentary research, interviews, focus groups, questionnaires and an in-depth study visit to INOVEM – a cabinet-making innovation centre integrated into a training establishment in Quebec.

Skills needs assessment for the arts and crafts sector

The report looks at the challenge of understanding the changing skill needs of the arts and crafts sector, especially around things like digitalization, social inclusion, and sustainability. Based on research from the MOSAIC project, data was collected in six countries through surveys and focus groups with 290 businesses. It found that while arts and crafts businesses are interested in these topics, they struggle to put them into practice due to conflicting priorities. The study highlights the importance of skills like adaptability, entrepreneurship, digital know-how, and teamwork. It also points out that combining personal and technical skills is key for future success, but acknowledges limitations like the small sample size and uncertainty about future trends.

Exploring the dimensions of
social inclusion in vocational
education in arts and crafts

This report shows how arts and crafts can help promote social inclusion by giving people a creative outlet, but it’s tricky to map out what inclusive practices look like in this space. Through the MOSAIC project, the report looks at how vocational education in arts and crafts can support inclusion with real-world examples.

It finds that while laws around inclusion need to be clearer, the industry is likely to focus more on social inclusion, and VET centers will need to make it a core part of their approach. As this happens, we’ll see more practices that embrace diversity and equality as essential to both education and the arts and crafts world.

Digital Teaching Report 1 - Mosaic

Digital Teaching Report

The report emphasizes the integration of digital tools, promoting skills such as online marketing, 3D printing, and digital design, to support the digital transition of arts and crafts training. This initiative is critical as it aims to bridge skills gaps identified in the sector, particularly in domains like sustainability, social inclusion, and entrepreneurship.

The study reveals that effective digital teaching requires a flexible, context-specific approach, enabling vocational education centers to adapt to diverse needs across countries. The findings highlight three key areas of development: enhanced collaboration between educational institutions and the industry, the creation of digital learning modules, and strategies for fostering sustainable and inclusive practices. These insights pave the way for the evolution of vocational training, ensuring young artisans and entrepreneurs can navigate and thrive in the digital age.

Ultimately, the report advocates for a holistic framework that combines technological innovation with cultural preservation, aligning the educational strategies with the demands of Industry 4.0. This approach is expected to not only elevate the sector but also strengthen its resilience in a rapidly changing world.

Environmental Education Report

Arts and crafts have become the forerunners of the EU’s sustainable development strategy through their strong potential of social and cultural innovation. However, their potential has remained to date largely untapped. The underlying research report contributes to bridging this gap by exploring how vocational educational and connected practices enable us to expand our thinking about environmental sustainability in arts and crafts.

In doing so, the report draws on the research conducted in the frame of MOSAIC – Mastering job-Oriented Skills in Arts & crafts thanks to Inclusive Centres of vocational excellence – an Erasmus+ project that explores how arts and crafts can respond more accurately to new emerging needs and societal changes.

The research is constructed using a practice-led lens that links the macro context (legal), to the micro-perspective provided by actors such as VET centers and craft/design businesses, to grasp the way in which best practices emerge.

One of the main outputs of this research is a framework that provides an organised manner of understanding best practices inside VET education that helps us to think about the future of eco-responsible education and skill creation. Structured in 4 chapters, the report shows that both green laws and innovative best practices inside the industry will continue to shape new visions around sustainability in arts and crafts education. The report also identifies several directions in which green practices are expected to evolve: a better integration of the environmental curriculum, industry-training adapted to real work needs, green skills development beyond materialistic determinism, hands-on green training, new forms of recognitions and certifications, flexible and tailored lifelong learning opportunities, the integration of new technologies into environmental training and green innovations driven by multi- and transdisciplinary collaborations.

Report findings draw attention to how ideas of responsible design, eco-innovation and research interventions are sustaining a long-term vision of sustainability, which impacts practitioners, educators and policymakers alike.

New economic and social business models to support
